Default Detecto's take

DETECT-O-VISION » If the M’s pick up Jeff Weaver …

It is recycled from last summer, but was bumped up in status.

Detecto does not like the move

Default And Jeff Sullivan's take

Lookout Landing :: A Seattle Mariners Blog

Quote:
In short, what it comes down to is that Weaver's a win or two better than Cha Baek over the course of a full year, and as has been the case for the past several seasons, a win or two in this division is pretty important. On top of that, getting from 80 wins to 90 wins is the most difficult upgrade for any team to make, and the Mariners are about to accomplish a fraction of that without really having to sacrifice anything. They're still not the best team in the AL West, but they need fewer things to bounce their way to look like they are now than they did a day ago. If that makes any sense.

It's bad news for Cha Baek, Jorge Campillo, Jake Woods, and the rest of the fifth-starter hopefuls, but it's good news for us, since Weaver provides the double bonus of making the Mariners better while also being able to keep the clubhouse more 'relaxed' during the tough times in the season. And the easy times. And all the times in between. He knows a guy. Expect at least a ten-fold increase in Ibanezesque "flu-like symptoms." And hey, it'll be hard for Willie Ballgame to pick up another 250 at bats if he's constantly ripped off his ass. The upside is limitless.
Marginal improvements for a single season are good. If it is more than marginal and the club gets stuck with him next year it means the team gets into contention territory.

Meanwhile the Mariners are also the favorites to land Jeff Weaver who has apparently made it known that he will not be returning to St. Louis. It seems like to be a 1-year contract worth about $8-9 million. Well, if you are already paying for the mediocrity of Jarrod Washburn, Horacio Ramirez, and Miguel Batista, you might as well go for four overpriced fours behind your ace.
I prefered to refer to those guys as threes, but I guess that comes down to definitions.

If you want to believe Jered Weaver this deal is already done.

I'll tell ya what, Weaver on a 1-year deal makes me feel better about the rotation with no guilt attached. I'm glad I won't have to watch Baek every fifth day.

And it's done.

He did indeed choose the 1 year deal. Worth $8.325 with incentives that will supposedly bring it up to $9.4 Million. No option.

1. Jamie Moyer...................................1. Felix Hernandez
2. Gil Meche.......................................2. Miguel Batista
3. Jarrod Washburn..............................3. Jarrod Washburn
4. Joel Pineiro......................................4. Jeff Weaver
5. Felix Hernandez................................5. Horacio Ramirez

Well, it's not what I had expected at the beginning of the off-season, but it's an improvement, albeit a slight one.

I would say a very slight one. I still don't feel good about this rotation with or without Weaver.

Default Not bad signing

I dont mind the signing of Weaver, He will playing for a even bigger payday next offseason which should benefit both him and the Mariners.

We are only on the hook with Weaver for one year. I guess I would rather see wasted money go into Weaver's bank account instead of having the front office put the money saved into their own pockets as an "efficiency bonus".

I feel like Charlton Heston at the end of Planet of the Apes.
