Default Offseason: Free Agent pitching

The Mariners need to add at least one starting pitcher who is better than a 4/5 to make their rotation respectable. The free agent market is rich in pitching this season and there are a number of big targets. While the M's have money, the prices are still high. The good news is that with the large number of pitchers out there a few are sure to slide under the radar. What is the key pitching acquisition you would like to see Seattle make this offseason?

I say they should sign Barry Zito, a workhorse who will thrive in a large pitchers park like Safeco and can be a marketable star (revenue generation) for the team over the next 5-6 years.

Of the biggest names on the market, Zito is last on my list.

He's a No. 3 starter and will get No. 1 dough.

You are correct. he is certainly going to get #1 starter money.

It isn't going to be the Mariners so I'm happy about that.

The problem is, in my opinion there isn't a single name free agent pitcher out there that is worth the money it's likely to take to sign him. I have no problem with the Mariners spending monopoly money on somebody worth it.

Who? Schmidt? No thanks.

Coldn't agree more. Bavasi has to do something, though, or he'll lose his gig. But maybe he's convinced the suits that not a single player is worth all the cash.

If so, kudos, Bill.

I sure wouldn't sign any of them. Not Schmidt, Zito, Mulder, Lilly, Meche, Padilla... none of them.

It's good to see that most Mariners observers see that. It wasn't long ago when most fans were all about getting the best players possible without any regard to the cost.

Seattle has some smart fans, that's for sure. Try going to some other clubs' forums... many of them have a large population of those who don't get it.

hmm...maybe we should call up TampaBay then and give them whatever they want for Kazmir. Jones? sure. Soriano? Sure, lol. I see what you are saying - so then why not spend cheap on Mulder for a year or two and hope he returns to form? If it's a crappy FA market then why not go a little bit cheaper and get a little more creative to fill the holes we got?

You aint kidding man. After the Soriano signing, I went to a Cubs place to see what they were thinking, and I was surprised. They were all estatic...with only a few people who actually weren't happy with the contract. Most of them said 'now lets go get Zito or Schmidt'. Its kinda ruining things...when im frustrated with the Seattle teams, I go elsewhere to read frustration fans of other teams. Its one of those 'at least youre not a Royals fan' type of things. Too bad its not as common as it was.

Does this mean people are getting stupider? (YES!)
