Sorry but that seems like an awful lot of money for a guy who isn't going to play very much. They should have let him walk. |

Hey welcome to the board. I'm hoping this is going to be the place to talk M's baseball in 2007.
It's going to be another s***** season so there should be plenty to discuss. Last edited by bedir than average; January 16th, 2007 at 05:11 PM. |

I was going to disagree, as the speculation all winter has been that Broussard was going to get at least 4 million. Then I looked at another signing today, Mike Lamb of the Astros, who inked a $2.7 mil 1-year deal. The two are pretty comparable:
G AB R H HR RBI BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG 144 432 61 125 21 63 26 103 2 1 .331 .484 .289 126 381 70 117 12 45 35 55 2 4 .361 .475 .307 The bottom is Lamb's line last year, the top is Big Ben. Ben strikes out too much, has slightly more power, but a lower OBP. Can anyone explain why Ben is worth $850,000 more than Lamb? Last edited by coachjeff; January 16th, 2007 at 12:14 PM. |

I can't explain why the Mariners signed him at all - unless there is another deal out there somewhere for either him or Sexson.
Yet another in a long line of inexplicable front office moves. They are either a whole lot smarter than me or a whole lot dumber. I'd like to think it was the former, but I'm beginning to have my doubts. |

There has to a move in the works. I think Rotoworld said it best.

The bench was so woeful last year that I don't mind having some left handed pop. Broussard, if paid in line with the market, is OK in that regard, but he is not someone I want inserted in the starting lineup. His dismal second half suggests that trading Sexson is not the best option, but Broussard would have substantial value on the trade market. All things being equal, he might even bring a decent prospect, oh I don't know, somebody like.... CHOO? (No, nobody would be that stupid.)(Sarcasm off)
Retaining Broussard as an asset in the team's stack of chips for now is not something I have a problem with. As a #10 hitter, he could be productive if rotated into the lineup with regularity. But the challenge will be for Hargrove to get him regular at-bats, which won't happen unless Vidro gets hurt. Maybe he's just insurance until Vidro gets through ST without blowing out his knee. Broussard's real value, as we all know is as trade bait. At this contract number, he is not nearly as attractive and can't bring the type of value that we need in a trade. I hope I'm wrong, but I smell a trade of Broussard for a B level spect coming. |

I always thought Brouusard was gonna be traded for a setup man. But since Reitsma was signed, who knows.

The value isn't awful. 3.5 v 2.7 is small change in baseball terms. But I don't get why the team needs a vet for that role (PH, bench 1B/DH). A championship caliber club does need it, but a 75-80 win team?

Perhaps BB thinks this is a championship team? I think the ceiling is 85 wins and that is with everything going right and a significant pitching acquisition down the line. I think BB is deluding himself.

BB is an idiot. I'm through defending this guy.
I have cut him some slack because I thought he took over a team that was left in horrible shape by Pat Gillick and I do think that he is under extreme pressure to win from impatient owners and fans, however some of his moves have just been complete head scratchers. Make no mistake about it, this team will finish dead last in the West again and a house cleaning will happen and we'll be back at square one again next winter. |

Broussard is a useful lefthanded bat. A contending team that sustains a key injury will be anxious to get him some time this season. Hopefully it will be after the team crashes and Beavis is replaced with a real GM. It's not like Broussard is blocking some kid from getting to play.
