Default Sometimes even a blind pig finds the corn cob.

Looks like I hit the $25 million figure on the nose. Lunacy.

I know this isn't purely a retaliation move, but come on...

Anyone else worried that this is going to lead to a major downfall for baseball?

You have to think in a few years, if some teams dont have good drafts, they're going to pay by being sold or whatever.

Im very sick of these contracts. The M's have been a major payroll team the last few years, and you know its bad when even they are having a hard time getting anything done.

Free Agency has turned into a Yankees, Mets, Red Yanx, Dodgers, Angels, Giants affair. Almost every marquee free agent heads there. Mariners, Rangers, Astros, and the Braves are the most recent teams that look like they're heading into the other pack.

Im not a genius on the economics and stuff, but thats my opinion. Maybe the luxury tax is too high?

I don't think this will lead to the downfall of baseball. It may lead to the downfall of some of the teams handing out these contracts, but thats their own faults.

it seems more that now FA for most teams is almost a luxury that comes around every few years. A team in their FA year blows a lot of money and signs some big people (beltre/sexson). Then in the years following it's harder to get things done. Next year Ichiro will be a FA. With the contracts this year do think he would continue at his 11-12mill/year deal or will he ask for 15+ per year?

Yeah, good call, Wiggen. I'd remembered that as we had exchanged a couple of comments about things possibly being out of whack. As we all seemed to agree here five days ago, Boston's posting fee for Matsuzaka sort of set the tone. Even if it had been at $40M, it would have been over the top. Not to mention the wild contracts handed out to many MLB FAs so far this off season. A symptom of a FA market lacking starting pitchers as well, I would guess.

As a long time Tigers fan, I wish Igawa good luck if he signs. I'm sure he will sign. Tellem and the Yanks have a nice relationship. As a long time Yankee hater, I hope he, uh... I cannot hope he struggles. It's just time for me to forget about him.

As for Ichiro asking for $15M per... at a glance, why not? But that sounds like a topic for a whole new thread.
