Default Pineiro has been non-tendered

Press Release

Quote:
Seattle Mariners executive vice president and general manager of baseball operations Bill Bavasi announced on Tuesday that the Mariners did not tender a 2007 contract offer to right-handed pitcher Joel Pineiro.

Pineiro is now a free agent and may negotiate with any of the 30 Major League teams.

Pineiro, 28, appeared in a career-high 40 games, including 25 starts, and posted an 8-13 record with a 6.36 ERA. He was 7-12, 6.62 in his starts and 1-1, 4.81 with one save in 15 relief appearances. The Mariners won all three of his Interleague Play starts (June 20 at Los Angeles, June 25 vs. San Diego and July 1 vs. Colorado).

Pineiro was Seattle's 12th-round selection in the 1997 First-Year Player Draft and spent his entire career in the Mariners organization. He has a Major League mark of 58-55, 4.48 in 185 games, 148 starts.

The team just got better.

J, have you seen a list of non-tenders?

Rotoworld has been throwing them out team by team. It's not a list per say, but somebody could make one by going through their transaction files.

How long until Gillick gives him a 2 year $15 million contract? He seems to have a thing for former Mariners pitchers that were around during his time.

I haven't seen a complete list yet, but ESPN apprears to be updating this one with some regularity...

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2695524

On the list currently...

Detroit Tigers: OF Alexis Gomez
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim: RHP Jason Bulger
New York Mets: RHP Victor Zambrano (Kazmir trade hurts much more now)
New York Yankees: OF Aaron Guiel
Seattle Mariners: RHP Joel Pineiro

Others I've seen around, Jon Knott for the Padres, Tsao for the Rockies, Marcus Giles and Chris Reitsma with the Braves, Claussen for the Reds...

Tsao would be interesting, if healthy.

Good. I think I despised Pineiro more than Meche.

Tsao I have liked for some time

M.Giles woud be worth a look, supposedly he's got off field issues though.

Giles is nice, but Jose Lopez and Yuni are occuping the Middle Infield. Maybe we can pick up a nice RP or something from the non-tenders.

Giles would be a better backup MI than Bloomquist would be.

I wouldn't mind Giles on the bench whatsoever on a cheap NRI style contract.

This appears to be the final list, bedir.

Former M's farmhand Jorge Sosa is also on the list, though he seems more like a one-year wonder at this point.

Heh Jorge Sosa.

Helped one my fantasy teams get through some tough times in 2005.

It's really telling that no one pried away Pineiro from the M's for a bag of balls. Even in this pitching-starved market, Joel is officially worthless.

Ankiel, Guiel, Hollins might all be nice options for back-up OF/DH roles.

Tsao would be my favorite in the relief role.

No arguement from me there, I'd love that. I'm guessing he'll be looking for a starting position, but if we can get him in as a NRI, we need to jump on that oppurtunity.
