I can't for the life of me figure out why Cairo is starting today, and certainly not batting second.
Ichiro had a 3 for 5 night with a steal, a 2 for 4 night with three steals for a total WPA in the past two nights of .401. He already has two hits and a steal today. Cairo has wasted the two opportunities, killing a rally in the 3rd where Ichiro had a single for an RBI as well as stealing second with two outs. Cairo for his career is a loser, with a .673 OPS, 3.92 RC/27, -4.69 WPA. He has never even been an average player offensively. He is a replacement level guy. Today, the choice to start him and bat him second has likely cost the team a run. While that run might not make the difference as Felix is having his worst game of the season, giving up runs for a team with this crappy an offense and a a below average bullpen is a serious mistake. Miguel Cairo being on the team is a waste of a roster spot. He is literally the least useful player on the ballclub and yet Wilkerson and Norton got moved.

While Cairo is useless and Norton would have been more valuable on the bench, there are a lot bigger problems on this team than Miguel Cairo. The defensive lapses coming on top of the dreadful bullpen performance and invisible offensive production makes this season look like a disaster.
I didn't think that this was a legitimate playoff team until the injuries to Escobar and Lackey. Well, now we are 5 games back and Lackey still hasn't thrown a pitch. I think the Bavasi death watch is going to start at the end of the next homestand if things don't change real fast. Bringing up Clement and Balantien sure hasn't done anything to motivate the other 23 guys, unless you want to count errors as production. Meanwhile over in Baltimore, George Sherrill has 11 saves and the rebuilding Orioles are over .500. |

I see Cairo as a sign of the greater problems of the health of the franchise. To me he is like the soreness in the arm that indicates heart attack.
