What I find sad is that most of the Royal fans I observed are ESTATIC about it. I think they are so happy about their FO finally signing a bigger name in FA, that they are blinded to what they are getting.

One said Meche tweaked his mechanics and became very effective last year! lol. I guess they had no idea that he was dominant a few years ago, but has been a mental case since. Im just amazed at how happy they are.

This move could potentially cripple them for the next half-decade, and if that doesnt make them bang their heads against the wall, then the sometimes great, mostly below average Meche will. Hes gonna be their ace, too!

Its a shame, Meche and Pineiro were two of my favorite Mariners for awhile, but man...they really went downhill after their injuries.

Default Meche

I realize this is probably going to be a stretch, but its possible the Royals are banking on the success of M's starters after they leave Seattle (Big Unit, Freddie, Hampton, Lowe, Fuentes, etc.)

With the talent that the Royals currently have, there's a real good chance that Gil will be their all-star rep in San Francisco next summer.

He was, but barely. He was drafted in 1990 (6th round pick), playeed in the minors for 3 years then played in 13 games in 1993 at the age of 20. He was traded to the Astros for Eric Anthony who was released amost exactly a year later while Hampton went on to play 6 years for Houston and then was traded to the Mets and the only player they got back that was servicable for them was Octavio Dotel. Dotel was a major part of the three team trade that got the Astros Carlos Beltran who led them on a strong playoff run. So pretty much the Astros kicked our ass on that deal.

Mike Hampton for Eric Anthony - just another in a long line of brilliant baseball moves by the Mariner front office.

Hey, I didn't say he was with us for long, but obviously we missed the boat on his upside.
