Along those lines, Mozeliak described the one that got away a year ago: Miguel Batista. A year ago the Cardinals were courting the author and righthander and Mozeliak negotiated a three-year, $20-million deal. Later that day, Gil Meche signed his $55 million deal. “That’s a problem,” his agent told the Cardinals. Mozeliak upped the offer to $25 million. Batista, like Silva (and Jeff Weaver for that matter), signed in Seattle.

The Cards have a decent TV deal, a GREAT radio deal and a brand new stadium and can't play for midlevel pitchers.

That should tell you something positive about the Mariner revenue streams and probably something negative about their decision making.

It's only money and MLB is manufacturing the stuff in this day and age so whatever they pay means little to nothing to you and I. The yearly budgets are only guidelines that will be excilpsed every year.

If STL won't play in the market then they will end up with guys like Joel Pineiro and that ought to learn them something!

I needed a vaction, and then work changed substantially. I'm over 50 hour weeks, plus two hours a day of commuting time. A few weeks ago I launched my own blog about Seattle Sounders FC and Life in Puget Sound. I won't be by these parts often as my focus has changed. Sorry about the unannounced retirement.
