SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners agreed to minor league contracts Wednesday with 18-year-old Japanese right-hander Kenta Suda and 17-year-old Taiwanese righty Yao Wen Chang.

Suda and Chang are to join the Mariners at extended spring training in April. Suda pitched for the NOMO Baseball Club in Japan last year and lives in Osaka, Japan. Chang is a native of Taichung, Taiwan.

Curious that that news comes out now. The Suda signing was announced in late December here (English), and apparently agreed upon in November.

Granted, it's a minor signing of an unknown. But he's young, played with the NOMO Baseball Club (the amateur club Hideo Nomo (now of the Royals) started up). 5'11, 176lbs. Fastball (tops out at 95mph), curve, two-seamer. Throws right, bats left.
