Default mariners sign cairo

Miguel Cairo-1B- MarinersJan. 8 - 9:01 pm et
Mariners signed infielder Miguel Cairo, who had been with the Cardinals, to a one-year contract.
Cairo would be tolerable as a 25th man, but the Mariners already have one of those in Willie Bloomquist. They didn't need another, and they especially didn't need to throw away a 40-man roster spot on one. Cairo has posted OPSs of 620, 600 and 631 the last three years. With fine defenders throughout the infield and Bloomquist capable of playing very good defense as a backup, the Mariners should be using the bench spot on someone likely to pick up a hit every once in a while. Mike Morse was one superior option already in the organization.

Pretty strange signing. I like the player and like what he can do but you make an excellent point about Morse.

I have lost any faith I ever had in Bill Bavasi.

I was thrilled about his hire and I cut him some slack considering the mess he walked into but he has done nothing in his tenure here to make me believe we are in good hands.

Another 'Pokey Reese' move by Bavasi. Totally useless.

No, Pokey had talent but was injured, Cairo hasn't had talent for years.

The net result will be the same. An old guy taking up roster space that somebody like Mike Morse could occupy - somebody that might actually surprise us now and again. The only reason Pokey didn't do so was because he was such a crock he couldn't even make the roster.

If wasting a roster space on Cairo is the worst thing Bavasi does this off season, I'll be happy.

Oh don't worry it's only January and he has plenty of time to do worse and he more than likely will.

Yeah that probably wasn't the best move either.

Again, I like the player but the dollar figure is ridiculous.
