jones, Triunfel , sherrill http://prospectinsider.com/2008/01/07/ms-getting-closer from rosenthal Mariners GM Bill Bavasi has said it is unlikely that he will trade his top pitching prospect, right-hander Brandon Morrow. But even if the M's decline to part with Morrow, they can put together an attractive package for Bedard. Jones, compared by some scouts to Torii Hunter, would become the Orioles' long-term answer in center field, developing alongside right fielder Nick Markakis. The Mariners also are willing to include catcher Jeff Clement and third baseman Matt Tuiasosopo, sources say. The Orioles, however, might prefer a choice of left-hander Tony Butler, right-hander Chris Tillman and 17-year-old shortstop Carlos Triunfel. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7...0813162&ATT=49 Last edited by phredmojo; January 7th, 2008 at 11:23 PM. |

I know the expert bloggers don't like it. We need starting pitching. How would this be a good deal? Who steps in to start in right if Jones is dealt? Balentien? Jimerson? Reed? |

This deal won't go away, and that makes me think something will happen, but to send that much talent seems an overpay.
Sure the market is paying that these days, but you don't get ahead by paying market values. You get ahead by beating the market. Its like housing. The market was paying 300k for comparitive homes 6 months ago, they are now 275k. If you bought at 300k, that doesn't mean you did the right thing just because it was the market.

Seems the Orioles are playing hardball on Roberts. Supposedly turned down Gallagher, Marshall and Cedeno insisting on Pie. That is a steep price for Roberts. Makes me understand why nothing has been done about Bedard.
Churchills sites says the Reds are in play with Bailey, Votto, Cueto and Encarnacion? Didn't the Reds already say no to a Bailey, Votto, Cueto for Bedard deal in December? Why would the same names + come up now? Rumor offer from Seattle: Jones, Tillman, Sherrill from a poster at ProspectInsider. |

That's an awful lot for Bedard without an extension. It is however, considerably better than the rumored offer of Jones, Clement, Truinfel. Any idea whether the source at PI is credible?
Under no circumstances should Truinfel be included with Jones and/or Clement. I can see building a package around Jones or Truinfel, but not both. That being said, I am not in favor of gutting the future by trading Jones, etc. for Bedard. I agree with USS Mariner that I wouldn't deal Jones for Bedard straight up. |

I would want them to take Sexson as well, probably sending Scott back.

Just say no to mortgaging the future. The scariest part is that there really is no downside for Bavasi doing a high risk trade the future for the present deal , since he will be gone unless everything breaks right.
I'd rather have Jones than Bedard. |

The only appropriate time to mortgage the future is when you have a shot at the championship. This club doesn't have that.

Exactly bedir, but as I've mentioned before Bavasi knows he has no future in Seattle so he doesn't really care what he has to give up.
He'll do anything he can to save his job on a year to year basis and that is why this deal will more than likely get done. |

Bedard, on the other hand, is a proven, winning, LEFT-HANDED staff ace. I'd make that trade in a heartbeat.
