I have no idea whether or not the acquistion of Erik Bedard would make the Mariners a contender in the West. I know with as much certainty as possible that the team they have now is not good enough. Make the deal, unless you somehow see Morrow as a TOR starter.

I think the point is that Bavasi wants to keep Morrow as insurance if Bedard can't be extended. He is willing to pay a steep price for Bedard in terms of future prospects, including our #1 (Jones) our #2 starting pitching prospect (Tillman), a top proven LH reliever (Sherrill) and possibly more. How much more could make or break this franchise's future. (Translate = Include Truinfel / Morrow and we get pitchforks and torches and head for BB's office)

If all we get is 2 years of Bedard, and we've paid with our top position player and our potential #2 starter (Morrow), our rotation will be in sad shape, and the only way to fix it will be to offer Zitoesque contracts to every Silvaesque free agent willing to play for the highest bidder.

Seems there is renewed momentum on this rumor as follow up rumors are now springing up everywhere

Tony Clark
Brad Wilkerson (link to MLB trade rumors claiming 1 year deal)

Adding Bedard and Bay would make the Mariners contenders for a AL West title, even if Jones and Morrow are both gone. Adding Bedard and Wilkerson is a less inspiring, but would be cheaper and maintain a stronger chance for a 2009 run.

Adding Bedard and Clark would sink my hopes for 08

I needed a vaction, and then work changed substantially. I'm over 50 hour weeks, plus two hours a day of commuting time. A few weeks ago I launched my own blog about Seattle Sounders FC and Life in Puget Sound. I won't be by these parts often as my focus has changed. Sorry about the unannounced retirement.
