Quote:
"I'm just in a state of disbelief right now,'' Broussard said moments ago from his home in Texas, about two hours from where the Rangers play. "I get to play two hours from where my wife and kids live. This is a dream. It's like getting to play for the hometown team.''
From the earlier Baker link.

Broussard will likely be a full time player as well.

So sad to see such a great one dimensional player leave the organization.

My initial reaction was what a stupid move. Then I thought maybe this is the first stage of a two step deal. Then I remembered that Bavasi is the GM and he always makes stupid trades.

Bavasi IS the Peter principle. He actually knows how to assemble a team of scouts and handle the amateur draft. I think he remembers who these guys were when they were 19 and bases too many of his current decisions on that assesment.

Yes, to assume that there is another move coming connected to this one would necessitate believing that there actually is a plan. There is no plan. The plan is to overpay for the left-overs, just like it is every year.

This team could add two quality starters before the first pitch of 2008 and I still wouldn't pick them to win 88 games again.

Two quality starters wouldn't do it?

Do you understand that if they had Moyer instead of HoRam they would have made the playoffs?

The Angels have improved and we have to get past them. The Red Sox, Yankees, Tigers, and Indians are all substantially better than we are, so there is no realistic wildcard chance.

Seriously, though, if one looks at the data, having just one league average pitcher last year rather than Weaver/HoRam and the fill-ins would have meant that the Mariners would have been about 4 to 6 wins better and if one or two of those were against the Angels the Mariners would have made the playoffs. That is more of a sign of how bad two pitchers were last year than a sign of their chance this year though.

I am not saying that adding Moyer this season would be enough, I am saying that if they added two Quality Starters they would certainly be in the hunt, as last year they were one average starter away.

Well there is no arguing that the rotation needs help.

However the winter meetings have come and gone and our rotation remains the same.

Scary.
