The Mariners have officially declined their mutual option on Jose Guillen. He is now virtually certain to be gone. Not a tremendous surprise, but Guillen did a lot of good things for the team last year. Clearly he is not in the plans for next year or thereafter, which means Adam Jones clearly is in the plans, and maybe Wlad is too.

This is a good move. The Mariners now have about 30M$ to spend to fill 2 SP slots and an offensive upgrade. That means they can take back a bad contract when sending one.

They've said they are going to keep the payroll relatively even, and so that is about 30M$. I don't know if they need to spend more, they just need to spend wisely.
If they can swap out Sexson or Vidro for a different, but not quite as bad contract that would be a good start. Taking someone who is a 4th OF or backup IF back who makes like 5M$ so that the salary stays somewhat neutral would be fine by me. Sign Fukudome, sure I dream, but a 4/44 deal would seem to be about at market due to the unknown. HeltonFan has him as +4 Wins which puts him at about a 91M$ four year deal. He's a good defender and projects to put up Good Ibanez' numbers. That would put the OF Adam Jones, Ichiro and Fukudome. Adding that defense immediately helps the pitching quite a bit. The corners would have more range and probably better arms, cutting down on the extra base. That helps this pitching staff quite a bit. Still, what pitcher on market would you want to add? OR even two? With more than 20M$ left to spend?

I would target either or both Kuroda and Colon as possible #2-3 type starters. Signing one pitcher is essential to replace Weaver and HorribleRam. The other slot could be filled with RRS, Baek or Feirabend or Morrow (later in the year if he develops another pitch)
Signing Fukudome is another good idea. He replaces Guillen and will cost less due to his injury induced drop in production last year. I can't believe that any 1st year player from Japan will draw 4/$91 as Heltonfan suggests, which is more than Ichiro will make. 4/44 (which is like Ichiro's prior deal) is much more realistic. Heltonfan's thread had an interesting suggestion citing Ringolsby that the Giants might be willing to part with Lincicum for a "proven hitter". I doubt we have anything that is enticing enough, unless we want to ship out Beltre, but BB would be a fool not to at least give the possibility of getting Tiny Tim back in the NW where he belongs. |

HeltonFan does admit that the 4/91 is his value based on WAR and age, but is not what he will get from any GM.

Which only supports the value of signing Fukudome. I tend to discount last year's sub-par performance due to injury, unless it shows he is injury prone. Given a relatively good track record of our team medical staff (with position players), I would rely on their ability to spot any likely recurring injury possibilities.
My gut says that one injury shouldn't scare us away. After all, the player I want most is definitely injury prone, but we need not turn this into another Griffey discussion. |

Well, I'm kind of with you on that. I think he's a good fit, IF two of the Ibanez/Vidro/Sexson trio head out
If I was playing this offseason on my PS3 I might flip out 40% of the roster, but that's unlikely in real life. I could handle an OF of Griffey, Ichiro, Fukudome if AdJones gets a great SP and the right guy is picked up to be the 4th OF.

It is still very early in the offseason. What is true now, might not be true later. And even if it doesn't happen, that does not mean that it shouldn't happen.

Speaking of the newsletter.. Gotta be a little scared of the possible big trade he alluded to. Involving 2 of Jones, Clement and/or Balentien. Also moving a young guy on the 25 man. The only two names that he gave that maybe on the return was Ethier or LaRoche.
Not liking that news too much as it sits. |

There has to be at least one if not more Starters involved.
If the deal can get Snell and LaRoche with one of the Trio (Ibanez, Sexson, Vidro) and one of the young kids going that would be fine by me.

Yeah - no need to take anything set in stone - rumors are rumors and church, eventhough he does a great job, is only right 50% of the time or so because stuff just doesn't always pan out. I'd be ok moving Jones/Clement in a package if it meant bringing in a legit #2 starter. If a trade of those two gives us Etheir or LaRoche then i'd pretty pissed off. Seeing as how last year we could have say got Manny as they wanted Jones in a deal - I fail to see how getting these guys would help us - although maybe I misunderstood the parameters of the deal.
