Default Giants Sign Zito

Take that Met and Ranger fans.

Well… we may not be going to the World Series now, but I am very happy with the signing if it happens. We need Zito, without him out rotation would become the laughingstock of the NL. Morris, Cain, Hennessey, Sanchez, and Lowry, no one had an ERA less than 4.15 last season. Zito can change that he will be pitching in the NL and in a pitchers park he can serve as a good mentor for Sanchez, Cain, Lowry, Hennessey, Lincecum… the Giants rotation is going to be great in five years.

ESPN.com - MLB - Sources: Zito agrees to seven-year deal with Giants

7 years - $126 million with an option for an 8th year?? Holy crap.

I'm sure Zito's numbers will look better in the NL, and this obviously helps the Giants in a weak division, but $126 million?

I thought they were going to give up a 20 year 20 million per year contract.

He should be worth it though if you consider this market and the park he will be pitching in

What a signing!!! Controversial yet needed...There's a breakdown here but:
  • Zito has spent 7 seasons in Major League Baseball, winning 102 games and losing 63 (.618 winning percentage).
  • He's consistently thrown over 200 innings for the last 6 seasons.
  • His best season was in 2002 when he won 23 games, lost 5 and had an ERA of 2.75 along with an ERA+ of 169, he was rewarded with the Cy Young Award that season and won his only playoff start that season.
  • He's 7-7 in the playoffs with an ERA of 3.25, those stats are swayed by his awful start against Detroit last season
  • He threw over 220 innings in the last two seasons and had an ERA+ of 116 both seasons

This signing isn't about the past 7 years, it's about the future 7 years.

So lets look at some other facts.
  • He's going to be 35 at the end of the contract(assuming the option is not picked up).
  • His K/9 has been steadily declining the last 3 years.
  • His BB/9 has been steadily rising the last 3 years.
  • His homerun rate has risen from really good to just league average.
  • Baseball reference lists his most comparable pitcher as Mike Hampton. And we all know how his $100M+ contract turned out.

But, he is moving to a park and a league that should help substain his numbers longer than normal.

If I were a Giants fan, I'd be really really happy for 2007, maybe even 2008. But for 2009 and beyond I'd be terrified.

Nice move by the Jints, but they're spending $34 million just for the two Barrys.

The oft-touted-on-the-internet stats re: Zito's k/bb ratio is misleading. If the Giants can score runs behind him consistently Barry Zito is a 20 game winner.
