OK, I have been trying to wrap my head around the Padres FO offseason actions and I think that maybe they may end up looking rosy...

First of all, the Mets trade that brought Bell and Ring definitely signals the eventual departure of Linebrink-and his trade value is skyrocketing with each passing day. The kind of insane contracts simple middle relievers like Baez are getting is ensuring that great value will be found in return (Manny possibly)??

Now on to Manny. The Pads name has come up a lot in talks and articles, and although it seems we could put together a decent package for him, I have been teased before and quite honestly I will believe it when I see it. I just don't remember the Pads ever winning a sweepstakes like this... EVER.

However...if it comes down between us and the Dodgers, I think we have the edge, even though the B*ches in Blue have better prospects than us. K. Greene, S. Linebrink and B. Giles could be attractive because they are all proven players whom they desperately need to fill holes. The Sox need a shortstop badly, along with a new closer with Papelbon headed for the rotation. And of course Giles fills the gap Manny leaves, although not offensively<--but then again KT could convince his protege Theo that Giles' gap to gap hitting will have a Wade Boggs effect at Fenway-and that could seal the deal...<--of course if we don't get Manny, the market will look pretty weak in the case of Big Boppers (save Barry Bonds-KT has a penchant for getting players that have killed his team in the past, but I don't think even he will touch that pile of crap). That said, KT may be putting all of his eggs in one basket with this Sox deal.

The (maybe) signing of Counsell is a good move...for the bench. If Khalil is dealt for Manny however, I could live with him as our starting SS. I would also sign Belliard to play second, although he will probably demand a contract similar to Kennedy's. If that's the case, we will probably end up with Todd Walker again. Losing Barfield was a shock, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say Kouz will have a monster rookie campaign (.300-25-80-.360OBP).

Also, what have any of you heard regarding Zito? Not much is out there about what teams are talking to him, although I can speculate that its probably limited to the big fish (Mets, Dodgers)-I actually don't think the RedSox and Yanks are interested, because of the $$ being shelled out for Matsuzaka, and Igawa. The Pads will probably make an offer, however it will be MUCH less than those other teams will offer. The only way Zito comes here is if his desire to pitch in San Diego is greater than his desire for millions more in moolah. My bold prediction: Zito signs with the Mets. They will offer the most money, and although Barry may be characterized as a "free spirit", money talks, and you don't hire a Scott Boras to take a discount.

Also, what's up with Mark Mulder? He could be an interesting pick-up, although Im sure we are not the only ones. Will 1 yr, 7m with an option for a second do it? Is he going to be ready to start the season? Or in July?

I don't see anyone mentioning a trade for Marcus Giles to play second. Does that mean you guys don't want him or do you just think it want happen?

Guys...plural? I think its just me here so far. Thanks for the reply!

Marcus Giles was mentioned a couple of weeks ago as a replacement for Barfield. I think Towers has a deal for him straight up for Linebrink on the table, but I think he is trying to plug his star reliever into another deal (Manny possibly). If that falls through, Maybe the deal for Giles goes through, a perhaps KT might get an extra prospect along with him.
