Default Xavier Nady to have Crohn's Disease Test

Quote:
BRADENTON, Fla. -- Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Xavier Nady will be tested Monday to determine if he has a chronic digestive ailment known as Crohn's disease.

Nady was hospitalized three days earlier this week for an inflamed intestine and, so far, doctors think he has a viral infection. But Nady is being tested for Crohn's disease because a cousin has it and it is known to run in the family.
With family history, Nady to take Crohn's disease test

I hope that Xavier Nady is alright.

I heard about this. Seems the Pirates' luck continues to be nothing but bad. Best wishes to him and his family during this difficult ordeal.

More on the illness, from Wikipedia:
Quote:
Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus; as a result, the symptoms of Crohn's disease can vary between affected individuals. The main gastrointestinal symptoms are abdominal pain, diarrhea, which may be bloody, and weight loss. Crohn's disease can also cause complications outside of the gastrointestinal tract such as skin rashes, arthritis, and inflammation of the eye.

Crohn's disease affects between 400,000 and 600,000 people in North America. Prevalence estimates for Northern Europe have ranged from 27–48 per 100,000. Crohn's disease often develops in the teenage years, though individuals in their 60s and 70s are also at increased risk. There is a genetic component to susceptibility with highest relative risk in siblings, affecting males and females equally. There is also an increased spouse risk, indicating a strong environmental factor.
