Pirates agreed to terms with outfielder Jody Gerut on a one-year, $850,000 contract.
Gerut takes a $25,000 pay cut after missing all of last season with knee issues, but he can make $140,000 in performance bonuses: $15,000 each for 200 and 250 plate appearances, $20,00 for 350 plate appearances, $25,000 each for 400 and 500 plate appearances and $40,000 for 550 plate appearances. It's unclear whether he's going to be ready for Opening Day, but once healthy, he should see a fair amount of time off the bench. A healthy Gerut is likely a better option in right field against right-handers than Xavier Nady.
