Wolf and Dodgers close to an agreement

The Phillies struck out on Alfonso Soriano, and now Randy Wolf.

Two baseball sources said yesterday that Wolf, a free agent who the Phillies hoped would fill the vacancy in their rotation, is expected to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Wolf, who is from Canoga Park, Calif., and attended Pepperdine, lives in the Los Angeles area.

It will be a big disappointment for the Phillies, who hoped Wolf would return after spending most of last season rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Wolf went 4-0 with a 5.56 ERA in 12 starts last season, but pitchers typically are stronger their second season removed from that surgery.

It is believed the Phillies offered more guaranteed years and money than the Dodgers, but Wolf, 30, apparently is willing to take a discount to return home. Foxsports.com reported that the Dodgers have proposed a one-year contract with a club option for 2008.

What are the Phillies' options now? Lefthander Barry Zito and righthander Jason Schmidt, considered the two top free-agent pitchers, have expressed little interest in coming to Philadelphia. Righthander Miguel Batista remains a candidate, though he and other starters of his stature are expected to let Zito, Schmidt and Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka, who is negotiating a contract with the Boston Red Sox, set the market first.

With Scott Boras as Matsuzaka's agent, the market could get crazy.

Brett Myers, Cole Hamels, Jon Lieber and Jamie Moyer are the Phillies' top four starters. General manager Pat Gillick has said he expects the fifth starter to come from outside the organization. An internal candidate who perhaps has an outside chance is lefthander Fabio Castro, who is pitching well in winter ball. Castro, whom the Phillies acquired in a trade with Texas on June 29, went 0-1 with a 1.54 ERA in 16 relief appearances for the Phillies.

Wolf went 69-60 with a 4.21 ERA in his Phillies career. A second-round pick in 1997, Wolf was an all-star in 2003.

there were many reports right after the season that he didnt want to come back. this doesnt surprise me

Just saw on ESPN's bottom line that the Dodgers and Wolf agreed to a one-year deal. It didn't mention any contract figures.
