Today in Phillies History by Broad and Pattison

Today in Phillies History for April 17thPhillies' All-time Record for Today:
32 wins, 32 losses, and 1 ties (for a winning percentage of 49 percent)

It Happened Today in:
1917: In the middle of a 5-run rally, Phillie Jimmy Lavender is called out when he mistakenly leaves second base. He had thought he was forced on a throw from the outfield, but in fact, the Boston second-baseman was pulled off the bag. By the time Phillies skipper Moran told Lavender of his error and sent him to third, the umpire called him out. The Phils eventually lost the game in 12 innings, and Moran protested to the league.
1923: The Phils and Brooklyn play to a 14-inning, 5-5 tie on opening day, setting a record for longest opening day game
1964: The Phillies beat the Cubs 10-8 at wind-blown Wrigley Field. The teams tied a major league record by hitting five home runs in an inning (the fifth).
1965: In the second inning, Phillie leadoff hitter Wes Covington struck out, but reached first on a passed ball. Dodger pitcher Don Drysdale then fanned the next three batters to total four strikeouts in the inning. The Phillies won the game, 3-2.
1969: Bill Stoneman of Montreal pitched a 7-0 no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies in only the 9th game of the Expos' existence
1972: Kiteman attempts to deliver the ball for the home opener by hang gliding from the upper deck of the Vet. He crashes into the center field seats, and the Phils lose to St. Louis, 5-4.
1976: Mike Schmidt goes 5-for-6 with 4 homers and 8 RBI in a 18-16 victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. He hit two homers off of Rick Reuschel, one off of his brother Paul, and one off of Mike Garman
1979: Garry Maddox gets a hit in the second inning and follows with another hit in each of the next three innings, a team record. The Phils beat Pittsburgh 13-2.
1996: The Phils tie an NL record by recording 21 infield assists in a 9-inning game at Montreal -- 9 by Kevin Stocker and 8 by Todd Ziele. The Phils won 9-3.
