Default Today in Phillies History 4/11

Today in Phillies History by Broad and Pattison

Phillies' All-time Record for Today:
15 wins, 20 losses, and 0 ties (for a winning percentage of 42 percent)

It Happened Today in:
1907: The Phils win their season opener in New York 3-0 behind a one-hitter by Frank Corridon
1917: The Phillies beat the Nationals 2-1 in an exhibition game in Washington, DC. Hall-of-famer Grover Cleveland Alexander started for the Phillies, against another hall-of-famer, Walter Johnson. Both were gone by the fourth inning.
1961: Robin Roberts ties a league-record with his 12th straight opening day start. Don Drysdale and the Dodgers win 6-2
1975: Cycleman and his wife deliver the ball for the home opener while cycling on a high wire over the Vet. The Phils lose the game to St. Louis, 6-3.
1976: While walking in from the bullpen at the Vet, Pittsburgh pitcher Doc Medich notices a fan in the stands having a heart attack. Medich, a medical student, jumps into the stands to perform CPR.
1980: Kiteman III succeeds in delivering the year's first ball by hang-gliding from the Vet's upper deck to home plate. The Phils beat Montreal in the home opener, 6-3.
1981: With the bases loaded, Gary Matthews lines a ball to St. Louis shortstop Garry Templeton. Templeton trapped the ball, but the umpire ruled it was caught. In the ensuing confusion, Mike Schmidt and Bake McBride are thrown out trying to advance.
1994: Despite undergoing surgery and radiation treatment for testicular cancer earlier in the spring, John Kruk makes his season debut in the Phillies' seventh game. He goes 3-for-5 with an RBI double, but the Phillies fall to Colorado 8-7

Phillies Transactions on This Day:
1965: Sold Dallas Green to Washington
1966: Signed free agent Roger Craig

Happy Birthday:
1886: Al Nixon
1916: Joe Antolick
1921: Jim Hearn
1951: Sid Monge
1958: Jeff Calhoun
1964: Amalio Carreno
1965: Turner Ward
1966: Steve Scarsone
1978: Josh Hancock
1983: Zack Segovia

Today's Debuts:
1928 Pinky Whitney
1955 Glen Gorbous
1961 Ken Lehman*
1961 Bob Sadowski*
1970 Sam Parrilla
1970 Dick Selma*
1975 Tom Hilgendorf*
1976 Ron Reed*
1982 Dave Roberts*
1982 Mike Krukow*
1987 Joe Cowley*

That 1994 story about Kruk is something. It's a shame he had to go threw that, and to see him come out and have a great game against the Rockies was great for the Phillies.
