Default This day in Phillies History 4/6

Today in Phillies History by Broad and Pattison

Today in Phillies History for April 6thPhillies' All-time Record for Today:
7 wins, 11 losses, and 0 ties (for a winning percentage of 38 percent)

It Happened Today in:
1903: The Phillies win the first game of the inaugural spring city series in 10 innings by a 2-0 score. The losing pitcher for the Athletics was Rube Waddell.
1928: In a City Series exhibition game, Bernie Friberg takes off from first when Jimmie Wilson hits a long drive to right. Ty Cobb makes the catch, then catches Friberg on the base paths for an unassisted outfield double play.
1974: On opening day, Mike Schmidt hits a two run home run off of Tug McGraw for a 5-4 Phillies victory. In the year's home opener stunt, the first ball was delivered by Cannonman, who exploded out of a (what else) cannon.
2001: The Phillies retire the jerseys of Hall-of-famers Jim Bunning (14), Grover Cleveland Alexander, and Chuck Klein. The team could not retire numbers for either Alexander or Klein because players did not wear numbers when Alexander played and because Klein wore six different numbers.
2006: Cardinals Jason Marquis and Josh Hancock hold Jimmy Rollins hitless in four at-bats, ending his 38-game hit streak. The Phils lose 4-2, getting swept in their opening series.

Phillies Transactions on This Day:
1975: Released Eddie Watt
1978: Released Terry Harmon
1985: Traded Bill Campbell and Ivan DeJesus to St. Louis for Dave Rucker
1990: Signed free agent Dickie Noles
1995: Signed free agent Gene Harris
1995: Signed free agent Charlie Hayes

Happy Birthday:
1914: Dee Moore
1937: Wayne Graham
1967: Tommy Greene
