Philadelphia Inquirer | 03/16/2007 | Phillies Notes | Manuel yet to pick opening-day starter
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Charlie Manuel said last week that he probably would know his Opening Day starter by yesterday. Yesterday came and went without an announcement. The choice is between righthanders Brett Myers and Freddy Garcia. If Myers continues to pitch on his scheduled day, he would pitch the season opener April 2 against Atlanta at Citizens Bank Park. Myers pitches Sunday against either Minnesota or Tampa Bay in a split-squad. He pitches again March 23 against Atlanta, although don't be surprised if Myers pitches in a minor-league game instead. (It might make more sense to have Myers face minor leaguers than the Braves, whom he certainly will be facing for real in April.) If he remains on schedule, he would face Tampa Bay March 28. That would be his last scheduled Grapefruit League start. Of course, the Phillies don't play April 1 after playing Boston in two exhibition games in Philadelphia to finish the month. They could shuffle their rotation and hold Myers to pitch April 4 against Atlanta in the second game of the season. Myers said he doesn't know when he will pitch against the Braves. Manuel said he expects to make an announcement before the end of the weekend. Who do you guys think it should be? I think it should be Myers, even though Garcia was the big acquisition in a trade.
