Philadelphia Daily News | 03/08/2007 | Myers pledges $100 a strikeout to help pay girl's medical costs
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Phil Myers couldn't help himself. The way he saw it, his son, Brett, was getting hammered after his arrest for allegedly hitting his wife outside the Phillies' team hotel in Boston in June. And, despite the charges - eventually dropped - his son was a good man. "Look at this picture," Phil said one day last August. "Brett's going to help this family get this little girl help." Phil pointed to a photo taped inside of Brett's locker at Citizens Bank Park. It showed Juliana Wetmore, a 4-year-old who lives near Brett's home in Jacksonville, Fla. She was afflicted with a birth defect called Treacher Collins syndrome; she lacked half the bones in her face at birth. Myers' father discovered the Wetmores' situation in 2005. The recipient of a 3-year, $25.75 million contract last month, Myers has pledged to donate $100 per strikeout this season, and will write at least a $20,000 check. The new contract and the possible image-cleansing are coincidental, Myers insists. He planned to help the Wetmores, who, though insured, feel financial strain after 23 operations for their daughter. "I was going to do it last year, and that stuff happened," Myers said. "I've been trying to do it for a couple of years. Since '05." Myers, 26, has a 4-year-old daughter, Kylie, and a son, Kolt, who will be 2 next month. And, to a degree, Juliana. "I feel like she's kind of mine," Myers said. "I couldn't handle it. I don't know many people strong enough to do it." Very generous by Brett Myers to do this. I think he's maturing finally and he will be the pitcher everyone thought he was going to be.
