Default Angels sign Gary Matthews Jr, 5 years 50 million

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2672448

:eek This deal makes Soriano's deal not so bad, considering Matthews Jr has had what 1 good season maybe 2? Matthews was considered a possibility for the Phillies, after Sheffield got traded, Soriano signed with the Cubs, Alou signed with the Mets.

If that's what it took to sign Matthews, I'm very pleased they passed. Aside from last year, I don't think his other seasons have been anything special. I believe I heard earlier that the Phils had some interest in Carlos Lee.

They had zero interest in Lee when Soriano was available, they focused their efforts on getting him, but when Soriano signed with the Cubs, Gillick almost went into panic mode I guess, and had no choice but to talk to Lee's representatives.

yeah I agree, Matthews would have been a nice choice for around $5 million a year, but definitely not $10 million.

I wouldn't say Lee is a panic option, but his other options have failed. Aramis Ramirez, Moises Alou, Sheffield. Lee's weight concerns me, but he still hits the ball alot better than our current left fielder.
