Less depth and a chance to be closer to his son motivated Karim Garcia to agree to a minor-league deal with Philadelphia on Monday, rather than with the Rockies.

Garcia, a 31-year-old outfielder, has spent the past two seasons in Japan, but caught scouts' eyes with his strong play in Mexico this winter.

"There were two reasons he went with Philadelphia: Colorado has a lot of young players competing for the final roster spots, and he has a 5-year-old son living in Connecticut that he should be able to see more often," agent Bobby Barrett said.

The Rockies have agreed to terms with left-handed hitting outfielder Alexis Gomez, who could get a roster spot and partially guaranteed contract, pending the results of his physical. Todd Hollandsworth and John Mabry are the remaining free agents with whom Colorado has had previous interest.

Starter Brian Lawrence threw in front of scouts Monday, including a Rockies representative, and two general managers. Colorado has yet to make a contract offer for the right-hander
