The Ottawa Senators will have to rely on backup goaltender Martin Gerber for at least a little while. Number one goalie Ray Emery is still bothered by a wrist injury and will not be ready for the season opener on Wednesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
''He's not going to play in Toronto and he's not going to play on the weekend,'' Senators head coach John Paddock said following Saturday's morning's pre-game skate. ''It's just like any other player; he's got to be game ready,'' Emery had the wrist on his catching hand surgically repaired in June and the Senators, showing their faith in his strong performance last season, signed him to a three-year, $9.5 million contract. The injury has limited Emery to just 40 minutes of game action this preseason. He allowed two goals on nine shots. He was scheduled to start Saturday and Sunday and then be ready for opening night in Toronto. The Sens changed plans Saturday morning, and called up Brian Elliott to serve as the backup behind Gerber. ''You never want to miss a regular season game and I definitely wanted to be ready for (the Maple Leafs on Wednesday), but I'd rather miss a game of two at the start of the season rather than have a nagging injury the rest of the year,'' Emery said. "I feel it's best and the coaches feel it's best for me to make sure I'm one hundred per cent before I get in there. And right now the best thing is to take a little bit more time to get it stronger," Emery explained. The good news for the Senators is that Gerber finished last season strongly and has followed up with a solid preseason. Gerber was 10-0-0-2 in his last 12 starts at the end of the 2006-07 season. In five preseason games, he has three wins, a 1.97 goals against average and a .947 save percentage. There was good news for the Senators on the injury front Saturday. Mike Fisher, who has not played in the preseason due to a groin injury suffered during the Stanley Cup Final last spring, will play tonight. So will Wade Redden, who had missed the last two exhibition games with a sore back. ![]()
