I read on another forum that it was mentioned on The Dan Patrick Show that the A's and Piazza were in "serious negotiations."
I like Piazza as another low-cost gamble. While his drop-off at the bat was greater than Thomas', Piazza is a better health risk and hit quite well in 2006 away from Petco Park. He put up a .292 EQA last season. So he'd be a downgrade from Thomas' .316 EQA. But at least we'd still have a competent hitter at DH, plus hopefully a full season from Milton Bradley and Bobby Crosby. |

Yeah - I heard it put as "serious negotiations" as well...just couldn't remember the phrase.
I think Piazza has a couple of good years left in the tank, especially in the American league. You get a top notch DH and a backup catcher in one person which could free up a roster spot. He's still a threat at the plate, and not having to have him catch makes him more of a positive to the team. I hope you guys get him. Of course, being a Mets fan, I just don't want him going to the Phillies (who also expressed interest). |

As a Mets fan, and someone that realized Mike Piazza needed to be a DH as opposed to catching, I think the Athletics made a good signing.
Piazza is not someone you want behind the plate at this point in his career, unless it is definitely needed. So, him DH'ing only helps him, making it less likely that he will injure himself. Piazza is certainly not the player he once was, but he is still a threat at the plate. He should be a nice addition to the Athletics offense. I wish him luck in Oakland. |
