The A's will have five picks in the first two rounds of the 2007 free agent draft, but they will be spread from #26 which is their only first round pick to #88 which is their second round pick.
For Zito signing with the Giants, they get a supplemental first rounder with #46 and the Giants second rounder at #73. For Thomas signing with the Blue Jays, they get a supplemental first rounder at #57. Thomas was a class B free agent. Teams no longer lose a draft pick for signing type B free agents. Also the draft will be held on a Thursday and Friday, June 7th and 8th. The first round and supp round will be televised live on TV. Finally MLB is looking to take advantage by televising the draft. Only 5 rounds will take place the first day, with the remaining 45 rounds to take place the second day. August 15th will be the final day to sign 2007 draft picks. No draft and follows of Jr Coll players exists anymore. This is the way the upcoming draft looks at this time, but a couple players have yet to sign who would merit supplemental picks. The notable thing I wanted to point out is that although the A's get five picks, they are spread out amongst the almost 100 first two rounds of picks instead of like 66 as has been the premium picks in the past. Also the talent looks to be above average and worth more than the talent scouts normally would see. |

The whole draft compensation thing is still ridiculous. We get a low supplemental pick and the Giants second rounder for Zito, while the Giants have two first rounders. I think teams should be able to store 1st round picks. A team can lose 2 free agents and sign 2 free agents, and so are no worse off, but will still gain an extra 1st round pick (2 if they are in the top 15) and an extra couple supplemental picks.

Yeah I forgot about Schmidt. So basically the Giants have just swapped their 2nd and 3rd rounders for 1st rounders and added themselves a couple of supplemental picks into the bargain. A fairer way would be not to set the compensation picks in stone so that the Giants would have lost one of their extra picks for signing Zito.

Nice exchange of free agents and draft picks if one can get it, huh??? I concur that the compensation on free agents is ridiculous. And yes Thomas should have been rated as a Type A. But one cannot change the way things are done. Realistically A's should have received one of draft picks the Giants received, leaving their top 15 pick alone.
