ESPN.com - MLB - Nixon's the one, agrees to one-year deal with Tribe
Mark one more possiblity off the OF list. 1 year 3M, I wouldn't really have wanted him for that. |

Cubs say they will sign Cliff Floyd this weekend... That will end the listing of players that the fans wanted. The players are feasting off of all the money being thrown at them this winter. Best buys went to Nats who signed a multitude of players to minor league contracts, probably about 50 according to my count.

as he was designated for assignment when the Indians signed Trot Nixon. Guthrie is a former first round draft pick from 2002 who might make a good acquisition for BBeane of the type of Gaudin, etc. I know we do not need another pitcher more so than we need a hitter, but a minor league contract might be filled up here with a major league talent.

I remember Guthrie was one of the pitchers Beane was interested in, but his expected price tag and Boras scared him off. Although his star has certainly dimmed recently and he has been hit hard in his very brief stints in the majors, he did ok last year in AAA, and had enough talent when he was drafted for me to take a flier on him. He'll be 28 on opening day though so he'll never be the ace he was projected to be, but he may turn out to be a serviceable pitcher.

I doubt even Boras could get Guthrie anything more than a minor league contract. Could be a good option to have in AAA now that Jerome Williams is gone.
I'd like to see something get done for Floyd. Unless the Cubs manage to trade Jones I can't see where he'd fit. They already have Murton, Soriano and Pie knocking on the door. If he was cheap enough I'd like to see him in Oakland. |

OK, you want a debate topic? Here's one to pass some time.
Would the A's have been better off with a Craig Wilson/Trot Nixon platoon or Piazza? PECOTA projections: Wilson: .269 EQA Nixon: .273 EQA Cost: $5 mil Piazza: .271 EQA Cost: $8.5 mil Nixon, though injury prone, could play some OF when Bradley and Kotsay are done. Wilson is a DH. |
