Default Haren/Blanton on the block

BB is at least exploring possibilities as far as trading Dan Haren and Joe Blanton. I'd hate to lose them, but I can understand looking into this as the Angels aren't getting any worse and it could be tough for us to compete next year, healthy or not.

Espn's rumor mill reported that the D-Backs are interested and could offer and infielder named Carlos Quentin as part of a deal for the two. That's the only name that was mentioned. Anyone know anything about him?

Obviously, we'd need pitching as part of any deal as well. I know nothing about what the D-Backs have in their system in that regard. Or ours, for that matter.

Haren will go shortly after Johan Santana's destination is settled, IMO. All the teams that don't get Santana will focus on Haren.

That's kind of what I figured. That situation will probably also drive up BB's asking price.

I read today on Buster Olney's blog something to the effect of "the Athletics are seriously committed to exploring trade options for Haren and Blanton even if they aren't seriously committed to actually trading them."

Whatever that means.

It means Beane will listen to any offer for any of his players, which has always been true.

Hmmm, if it wasn't Beane possibley dealing them, but someone else I would be happy. But considering he did quite well for himself with the Hudson/Mulder/Zito situation I feel a little hopeless.

http://mlb.traderumors.com is reporting:

Quote:
Did you expect anything different? Billy Beane is happy to field offers on Dan Haren and Joe Blanton, but he'll require a king's ransom for either pitcher. Jayson Stark says Beane asked the Yankees for two of Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, and Ian Kennedy for Haren. With the Red Sox it was two of Clay Buchholz, Jon Lester, and Jacoby Ellsbury. The Mets would have to pony up Carlos Gomez and Fernando Martinez. With two starters under contract through 2010, Beane and the A's are sitting pretty.
I really don't see this happening. I think we'll go into 2008 with our pitching staff the same as it was last year.

Although if Beane could unload Blanton for two of Hughes, Chamberlain or Kennedy, I wouldn't complain.

Okay, now that Haren is gone....anyone else thinking Billy may make another move to actually power the team for the present and make them competitive this year?
I for one don't think he's finished...

I get the feeling there's more on the horizon, but I'm not sure how much of it will be aimed at making the team good in 2008. I get the feeling he's gunning for 2010 or 2011.

Blanton will probably go next is my guess.
