Default The Official New York Yankees Off-Season Thread

Im a big yankees fan and every offseason the yankees usually do something big.

So far the Yankees traded Sheffield to the Tigers for 3 prospects and we traded Jaret Wright for Chris Britton.

Hopefully we can get a good starter .

I think alot of us are waiting for something big but it may not happen. We need a couple of pitchers and maybe, maybe, a RH firstbaseman but the truth is this club has no problemmo scoring runs. We need pitching and tons of it and BCashman is working on that.

Would have been nice if they fired Joe Torre.

Why should they fire the best manager in baseball? I believe they won the division. And with limited talent most of the time.

Let’s face it, we can’t count on Pavano. Anything good he does should be considered a bonus.

The only two starters who I have confidence in right now are Wang and Mussina. Johnson will be coming off back surgery and he’s just about done anyways. I hear we’re interested in Lilly, and I hope we get him. He had success when he was here, and has a good track record against the Red Sox.

Hughes will be the real deal, but I don’t want to rush him. I see him being a contributor towards the 2nd half of the season. I’m also high on Sanchez, who we got in the Sheffield deal, as well as Clippard. We’re loaded with pitching prospects in our farm system, which is always a great thing.

We also could use a right-handed hitting 1st baseman to platoon with Giambi and an upgrade at backup catcher. We also have to make a tough decision with whether to bring Bernie back as a 5th outfielder.

Kudos to Cashman. He’s been great since taking control over all operations. If he always had full control, we would’ve had a couple more championships by now.

I REALLY want to see Ted Lilly back in pinstripes.

Bernie as much as he is loved, won't be back.

I like to give Phillips an actual shot at first base this year instead of like not playing him like we did last year. I think he can really hit and plays a great 1B.

Anybody have any clue of who we can get to backup Posada?

Toby Hall is a possibility.

If Pavano stays healthy he should have a average year or better. We dont know how is arm is gonna react yet so we cant judge him yet. If Pavano gets hurt again should we release him or trade him?

If Pavano stays healthy who knows what we can epect from him since he hasn't pitched a meaningful inning in ages. If he gets hurt agian, we can't trade him cause nobody is going to want a hurt pitcher. Its either deal with him or eat the rest of the contract. Speaking of which anybody know how many years are left on it?

As far as our starting pitching goes the only pitchers we know that will be ready to go to start the season as of now are Mussina and Wang. Lets face it, the Wright trade as of now is not very good because we don't have another starter to fit in. Karstans and Rasner are going to get a shot but who knows if they will be able to keep pitching as well as they have.

We need to sign at least 2 starts in my opinion to be safe. Lilly should be one of the two pitchers sign to give us another Lefty and a guy we know can pitch under the pressure of NY.

The best manager in Baseball? What manager have u been watching? Maybe at keeping egos in check but not motivating his players to play hard or even playing small ball. All he does is sit there.

Well, I’m not sure if we can assume that a healthy Pavano is going to even give us an average season. I mean, how many times have we seen pitchers come from the NL to the AL and have struggled? Plus, Pavano wasn’t very good when he was healthy his first season here. I also doubt he has any trade value. If he can’t contribute this season, then take the hit and cut your loss.

We probably can get a good pitcher back for Melky, but I’d be hesitant on trading him.

We all seem to be unanimous with bringing Lilly aboard. Let’s get him and I think we can get by with Wang, Mussina, Lilly, Johnson, and Karstens/Rasner until Hughes/Clippard/Sanchez are ready.

Toby Hall would be a nice addition to backup Posada. I’m not so sure about Hillenbrand though. Didn’t this guy cause problems in Toronto with the manager? That’s not going to fly in this clubhouse.

As for Torre, this will be his last season. I wonder who’s going to replace him, Donnie Baseball or Girardi, perhaps?

I would never trade Pavano at this point or even if he comes back and proves he's healthy. What's the point? You're not going to get anything of value for the guy at this point with his contract and history of not pitching. Plus, only National League teams would even look at him, as he has not shown whether he can even pitch in the American League to this point.

What kind of pitcher do you think we can get for just Melky?

As for your rotation point, that sounds like a good plan.

Toby Hall as the backup catcher? I actually was the one to mention that in my post earlier in this thread. The guy is a decent defender who hits his weight, which is something that our recent backup catchers have been unable to do it seems. Also, Toby Hall does not strikeout often. He is a contact hitter, which is a big difference over what our previous backup catchers have been able to do as well.

It could be Torre's last season. It might not be. Depends on what happens this season and postseason. If we win the World Series or even make it there, I think the decision to return will be up to him. He could retire, he could not retire. If they don't make it to the World Series I think George is going to end it. As for his replacement, I would go with Girardi, but I think George is grooming Donny to be the future manager.

Yes, I agree that we might as well stick with Pavano for another season. Rumor has it that he’s been working out more than ever to stay healthy. Of course we’ll have to see it to believe it! He needs to get the respect from his teammates back.

Well, I probably wouldn’t trade Melky, considering how good he was last season. He can spot start at any of the OF positions and has shown he’s a good defender and contact hitter. I think his power will increase in time. I would imagine we could get back a #3 type starter for Melky, but again I probably wouldn’t make the deal.

I’m still a little upset we lost the bid on the Japanese pitcher to the Red Sox though, but what can you do?

Do we have any catchers in the farm system who are good enough to backup Posada? It would be nice to get a catcher who can hit even a little. Stinnett and Fasano were pretty much automatic outs and a black hole in our lineup. I always liked Hall from his time with the Devil Rays. Hope we can get him.

Personally, I think this will be Torre’s last season. I think he’s fed up with being criticized from Steinbrenner. Hopefully Joe gets a ring for the thumb and goes out on top!

Will Nieves would be our backup catcher if we didn't sign a backup in the free agent market. Here are his stats:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/n/nievewi01.shtml

He is 29 years old. Not really a prospect at all. Catching is one of if not our weakest position in the minor leagues. Our highest ceiling catcher in the minors is sixteen years of age and has never participated in a minor league game as of yet. His name is Jesus Montero, you may have heard of him. Obviously he is not ready for the majors yet. It's going to take him six to eight years to be ready, to be honest. He might even outgrow the catchers position altogether and be switched to a position such as first base.
