Default Yankee Rumors

The Yankees are the focus of some trade rumors. Nothing huge, but interesting.

Several media outlets are rumoring Scott Proctor to the Devil Rays for Ty Wigginton. The Yankees are also apparently interested in Wilson Betemit, but the Dodgers want more than Proctor. Farnsworth?

Now the New York Post is reporting that the Yankees have interest in acquiring Jon Garland and Matt Thornton from the White Sox. No indication of what's going Chicago's way.

The Yankees are also in on the Teixeira talks but "not in the forefront." I think they may be trying to keep him from Boston, which is reportedly a frontrunner to acquire him.

Well we could use pitching seeing as our offense doesnt have any problems now. Someone in the bullpen could help and our starting rotation is fine.

According to current reports, the Yankees are heavy in the Gagne talks and they are looking at Chad Qualls from Houston. I still think we could use some more depth on the bench.

Detroit apparently continues to be interested in Farnsworth. What do you think we could get for him? I wonder what it would take to shake loose former Yankee Marcus Thames.

All in all, I'm pleased with the move today. There wasn't much out there in terms of the bullpen, keeping in mind of course that we can still add a quality arm that passes through waivers.

I sure would have liked to get rid of Farnsworth though, for almost anything.

I expect it to change quickly, but here is the 25-man roster as of the moment:

PITCHERS (11) -- Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte, Mike Mussina, Chien-Ming Wang, Mariano Rivera, Luis Vizcaino, Mike Myers, Kyle Farnsworth, Ron Villone, Brian Bruney, Sean Henn

CATCHERS (2) -- Jorge Posada, Jose Molina

INFIELDERS (7) -- Andy Phillips, Robinson Cano, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Miguel Cairo, Wilson Betemit, Chris Basak

OUTFIELDERS (5) -- Hideki Matsui, Melky Cabrera, Bobby Abreu, Johnny Damon, Shelley Duncan

We're going to have to make some changes when Hughes returns, when Karstens comes back, when we get Giambi back, and when Joba Chamberlain arrives (he'll be in the bullpen at first.) Also, I'd like to make a spot for Britton and one to keep Henn on the club as well. Younger, cheaper, and more effective.

When G-Man comes back, we'll have at least one of Damon, Phillips, Betemit, or Giambi availbale off the bench every night. Joe can make some moves late in ballgames. Damon can rest his legs. When Hughes comes to bolster the rotation (Friday or Saturday, depending on whether they hold Wang back an extra day), the rotation is stronger (stronger than Boston's, I think.) Boston's bullpen is stronger, although they don't have a weapon like Mariano, but when Chamberlain, Karstens, and hopefully Britton come to join the pen, we upgrade it close to what the Red Sox have, even with Gagne.

Overall, when healthy, we're a better club. And we're getting healthy. August should be fascinating, especially since all the experts proclaimed the race over yesterday. Won't it be fun to watch their faces as the Yankees close in?

According to Tyler Kepner, the Yankees "rejected the Atlanta Braves' late offer of Bob Wickman for Kyle Farnsworth, a potential swap of relievers in which the Yankees would have had to pay the remainder of Farnsworth's salary."

You mean we could have paid Farnsy to play elsewhere and gotten an effective, if aging, reliever whom we know can play in New York? I would have made that trade in a heartbeat.

Not quite sure why we didn't get bullpen help and traded Proctor.

I think because Proctor's logged a lot of innings over the past two years and the Yanks are worried about a breakdown.

Myers designated for assignment today. Give me Joba!!!

Myers made room for Brower, but Joba was called up in Bruney's place and Giambi was activated. Two of the four youngest pitchers in baaseball are Yankees. That must drive the Yankee-haters nutso.

And with the new arrivals, the team has depth and a better, younger staff. And by my count, 9 homegrown players (plus one homegrown who left, then returned.)

Updating the roster:

PITCHERS (12) -- Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte, Mike Mussina, Chien-Ming Wang, Phil Hughes, Mariano Rivera, Luis Vizcaino, Jim Brower, Kyle Farnsworth, Ron Villone, Joba Chamberlain, Jeff Karstens

CATCHERS (2) -- Jorge Posada, Jose Molina

INFIELDERS (6) -- Andy Phillips, Robinson Cano, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Wilson Betemit, Jason Giambi

OUTFIELDERS (5) -- Hideki Matsui, Melky Cabrera, Bobby Abreu, Johnny Damon, Shelley Duncan

K-Farn could still end up in Atlanta, but will have to take his contract as well. Yanks believe the Braves will become a little more desperate and hope Kyle can recreate the stuff he had in Atlanta. Then it will be even up for Wickman (whom you all realize is no walk in the park - but can handle NY)
But, he has to get waived out of the American League. It's believed Detroit and Boston would claim him. Detroit because they believe he can reclaim what he had there in 2005 as well and Boston because they know him leaving and adding anyone improves the Yanks. Yanks would pull back Kyle if it got to the Sox, unless we wanted to get strapped with Tavarez, and to tell you the truth, I would rather keep Kyle. Tavarez era for the last month is almost 8.00 and he will likely be assigned soon to make room for journeyman minor leaguer Devern Hansack who can likely fill the same roll as spot starter, long man or situational righty. His K:W ratio is 3 to 1 and thats where Tavarez is getting hurt. Yanks would also pull back if it came to Detroit as well. Their pitching is reeling and we would feel stupid if he actually helped them out.

My source for this info is usually pretty good.
