Default Time To Trade Johnny Damon?

North Jersey Media Group providing local news, sports & classifieds for Northern New Jersey!

Quote:
the Yankees will likely stand pat for a month or so. They have to allow for Roger Clemens' debut and his assimilation into the clubhouse. If there's one remaining miracle available to the Yankees, it's being rescued by the Rocket. He'll get four or five starts to change the karma in the clubhouse.

If not -- if the Yankees are still slogging along in a double-digit deficit by the end of June -- they'll have to at least explore previously unthinkable trade options.

The first is Alex Rodriguez (who probably would refuse to be dealt), followed by Damon and Abreu.

He's looked strangely out of sync all year, both at the plate and in the field. Even in the clubhouse, Damon gives off a darker vibe than he did last summer. The happy-go-lucky, Red Sox Idiot seems dead now.
Here is the take on the idea form MLB Trade Rumors

MLB Trade Rumors: Time To Trade Johnny Damon?

Quote:
Damon is earning $13MM annually through 2009, and has a partial no-trade clause. His age 33 season has been a disappointment so far; he's hitting .259/.363/.364. His flyball rate is down from 40% to 32%; that might have something to do with it.

Damon was supposed to enter the 2007 season in good health, with a broken foot bone healed and his shoulder 100%. However, he began the regular season with cramps in his calves. That developed into a strain, and then hamstring and back problems surfaced in late April. Jason Giambi's injury will give the Yankees a chance to DH Damon, but it really seems like he needs to rest for two weeks on the DL.

Trading Damon would not be easy right now, and would qualify as selling low. The Yankees would probably have to eat some of his salary. I really can't think of a club that would make sense though. I'd suggest the White Sox, but they seem too thrilled with Darin Erstad.
So should the Yankees trade Damon?

I think they should at least wait until they see how the 1B experiment and giving Melky fulltime playing time work out.

Where's #51 when you need him?

Why are you bent on traded players when their value is low.... that's just moronic.

I like the idea of Damon at 1B, though we'll see if that works out. If it doesn't I would far prefer to have Damon at DH than CF again. I definitely like Melky out in CF and think that defense is often a very underestimated factor because of the difficulty that comes with measuring it. Giambi, much as I like him, is probably the most expendible player we have. However, I hope Damon at 1B works out so that we can have both Damon and Giambi.

Apparently, according to reports, the Braves have some interest in Damon. so far, all tehy've been willing to offer is Scott Thorman, whom I don't want. But if we could get a decent reliever and a middle IF (Pete Orr?) I might think about it.

It's probably similar to the Abreu situation in reverse -- the more money we pay, the better the return will be.
