I spent a pleasant Saturday evening, May 19, watching the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees play the Richmond Braves.
Chase Wright started for the Yankees and was excellent. He went 7 2/3, gave up 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits, walked 3, struck out 2. He was followed by Chris Britton, who looks like he's been on the David Wells diet, and Jim Brower. Scranton put two runners on in the first but was unable to score. Richmond used a walk, a wild pitch, and a double to take a 1-0 lead. However, in the Scranton second, SS Alberto Gonzalez singled, 2B Angel Chavez doubled, and CF (and leadoff hitter) Kevin Thompson doubled, giving the Baby Bombers a 2-1 lead. They would make it 3-1 on a third-inning HR by DH Andy Phillips. BTW, Phillips went into the game hitting .322 with 6 HR and 21 BI. Is it time to call him up?) After 1B Eric Duncan's long flyout to CF following the Phillips HR, Braves starter Ryan Basner was removed in favor of Jeff Bennett. He was Richmond's most effective pitcher, holding the Yankees to no runs and 3 hits over 2 2/3. Meanwhile, in the fifth, Richmond used a double and two singles to pull to within one run. But Scranton came back with singles by Chavez and C Omir Santos and a double-play ball by KT, scoring Chavez. Richmond scored an unearned run in the sixth inning, as the first batter reached base on an error by 3B Chris Basak, Wright threw another wild one, and the next two batters grounded to shortstop, the second groundout (which should have been the third out) scoring the run. The Braves put up another run in the eighth on a double and a single. But the Yankees answered in the ninth when RF Bronson Sardinha singled and Phillips doubled, scoring Sardinha. Richmond's last ups were risky. They used a double and a single to put up one run, closing it to 5-4. Britton was pulled and Brower came in to ge the last out. He gave up a screaming liner which Gonzalez reached out and dramatically caught to ent the ballgame. Yankes win! Theeeeee Yankees win! Wright looked good. KT plays one heck of a CF. Gonzalez made a couple of outstanding plays at shortstop. We may have something in this kid, one of the 4 players acquired for Randy Johnson. BTW, Richmond's last pitcher, the loser, was 40-year-old Rheal Cormier. an anyone tell me what's up with Sean Henn? He was reportedly sent to SWB when Villone was called up, so I was surprised not to see his name on my roster sheet. Is he hurt? |
