There's little reason for it: if you are not hitting, you should be lowered in the lineup, not raised in the lineup. He should be batting 7th-9th in the order, not 2nd or 3rd. I don't get it: I could find more reason to put Abreu on the bench for a couple of days before I could find reason to have him get the 2nd most at bats per game batting second.

Could it be a move similar to what the Mariners did with Beltre last year in order fro him to come around to hit?

I'm sorry I left for a while. I needed a vaction, and then work changed substantially. I'm over 50 hour weeks, plus two hours a day of commuting time. The idea is that if you put the struggling hitter second, between a good leadoff man and several quality hitters (Jeter, A-Rod, etc.), he'll see more good pitches and he'll get more of an opportunity to come out of his slump.
The Nationals are trying the same thing with Cristian Guzman and it seems to be working for them. I'd keep Abreu in the second hole for a while and see if the theory works. |
