Phelps could be playing his way onto Yankees
"Rule 5 draft pick Josh Phelps continued to make a compelling case for himself, going 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBI in yesterday's 4-3 loss against the Twins." North Jersey Media Group providing local news, sports & classifieds for Northern New Jersey! "Josh Phelps homered to straightaway center off Boof Bonser to raise his spring average to .438. That may all but end the backup first base battle with Andy Phillips (0-for-4, .190)." NJ.com: Everything Jersey "Only one of them will make the team when manager Joe Torre announces his roster on Friday, and Phelps seems to have the edge over Phillips despite the fact that Phillips spent most of the past two seasons on the Yankees roster." Phelps has a blast as Phillips ponders hand of fate - Yankees - NY Daily News "Joe Torre doesn't plan on revealing his final roster decisions until Friday or Saturday, but the battle for the righthanded first base job appears to be a one-sided fight. That was apparent yesterday, as Josh Phelps added to his impressive spring with two more hits, including a colossal home run to straightaway center field in the second inning against the Twins."

Yeah, against the lefty Kazmir.
Good moves by the Yankees today. No personal preferences were shown to Villone or Phillips. Phelps and Henn deserved to make the team over those two...I think Cashman had a big hand in making sure the deserving players made the team. |
