Go ahead: take some guesses. Here's my guess...
1)Wang 2)Zito(I think George is going to go crazy and make a splash) 3)Mussina 4)Karstens 5)Pavano(if healthy) I don't think Randy is going to be ready come the start of the year |

I think the having Proctor start idea by Cashman is just a bluff on his part to tell the other teams and agents that he has a plan in case he doesn't sign anyone. Remember, he also said that Bubba Crosby might be the starting center fielder in last years off season. As far as Randy Johnson goes, even if he does come back to start the season, what can we really expect out of him? He's definently never going to be the ace-type player we thought we were getting. Talking about Randy Johnson is depressing... |

Well the funny thing about Crosby is i believe he would have been our starter if we didn't sign Damon. I think it may have been a half-bluff though so teams don't offer Damon a lot. But i think he was ready to go into the season as Crosby as our CF.
When we got RJ we thought we were getting a Number 1 starter. That is by far from what we got. If anything a nice surprise has been Wang emerging as a Number 1. RJ i think will be an effective 2 or 3 starter as well as Moose. |

You're probably right. The problem is, I think it's a waste of money to overpay guys like Meche and Suppan. They will under perform based on the expectations they will garner because they will be getting contracts they don't deserve. Suppan's numbers are not impressive by any stretch of the imagination. Hopefully George does not decide that he's going to sign him to a big deal based on his terrific playoff performances. That wouldn't be good. Ditto for Meche. He's not that good, but George might sign him because of his "stuff" and the fact that he pitches very well against the Yankees. I say George would make these signings because I don't think Cashman is stupid enough to sign either of those guys.

I'm thinking Randy may be an effective three or four starter. Keep in mind his ERA last year was 5.00. That's fifth starter material. If his name wasn't Randy Johnson and his contract wasn't so big, he would have gotten the boot because he was so bad. Thank goodness we got Wang. The year before last if he didn't appear we probably don't make the playoffs. And this year he was second in the Cy Young voting. He's been amazing so far. Obviously, I expect it to continue. Hopefully this team can continue to go with young pitchers starting this year. The advent of both Philip Hughes and Tyler Clippard may contribute to that. |

I think Phillp and Tyler are gonna be the next big things but not for at least another year.
As for Johnson. I believe the spot in rotation does not really matter during the regular season. Becuase starts get skipped all the time for whatever reasons. Not until the postseason do the spot people pitch in becomes important. But i do agree its because of his name/contract that he is still wearing the pinstripes. |

Yankees rotation:
On Paper: Mussina Wang RJ Pavano Free agent to be signed (like Lilly) On the field: Mussina Wang RJ Free agent as above. spot-starter/long man out of pen. (Lilly-lite, perhaps) That's not a slam on the Yankees, btw - no one has a good #5 starter. I think it is quite unlikely pavano is ready and, frankly, if he is, there is a good chance RJ won't be. Unless Cashman signs a pretty good starter to be the long man, you guys will see the likes of |
