Default Mientkiewicz Signs One Year Deal

Quote:
NEW YORK -- A little more than a year ago, Doug Mientkiewicz seemingly couldn't wait to leave New York. But once an opportunity to play for the Yankees appeared, the first baseman was eager to make his return.

Though he fielded offers from other clubs, the 32-year-old Mientkiewicz agreed to a one-year contract that will bring him back to the Big Apple, where he spent the 2005 season with the crosstown Mets.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman officially announced the deal in a conference call with reporters Friday, following Mientkiewicz's completion of a physical examination.

Mientkiewicz actually played decently for the Royals last season and continues to be one of the elite defensive first baseman in the league. Let's see if he can hit enough.

Phelps, Phillips and Mientkiewicz are all options for the Giambi-caddy job.

Great. There's one of my opening day predictions that has come true.

At least we got a better back up at first base. Doug is a alright hitter and should get us some big hits at times.

Good move Cashman
