While the Yankees have been pursuing pitchers in their talks with the D-Backs, Padres and other West Coast teams, it's believed they have made progress in their plans for the spare parts they need at first base and utility infielder. A source said the Yankees are zeroing in on Doug Mientkiewicz to play first while Jason Giambi is the designated hitter, even though Mientkiewicz is a lefthanded batter.

Also, the source said, Mark Loretta may be the Yankees' first choice to be a utility infielder. Loretta had hoped to find a job as a regular second baseman, but hasn't.

Rotoworld, at least, seems to think that at least the Mientkiewicz signing may be close:

The Yankees are closer to signing free agent Doug Mientkiewicz to take over as their primary first baseman.

Mientkiewicz's agent said last week that there was a two-year offer on the table from some team, but that was hard to believe at the time and there's been no clue as to who it might be since. He'll probably end up taking a one-year deal from the Yankees.

They also comment on Loretta:

The Yankees are believed to prefer Mark Loretta to Miguel Cairo as they seek a utility infielder.

Loretta would be a weak option as a regular first baseman for the Yanks, but as a backup at second and third, he'd be quite an upgrade over Cairo.

Doug and Ciaro are good signings. Ciaro gives you flexiablity with his ability to play multiple positions.

I like picking up Doug for his glove. If we lose the DH playing NL rules...we don't lose much offense in the lineup if Doug sits.
