Which Way to Go?

It's clear from the playoffs that the Yankees need an established #1 pitcher. Johan Santana of the Twins is expected to be made available. Unfortunately, the Twins are reported to want Cano.

Now, if it's Melky and even a couple of pitchers, you'd have to consider it. (Sign Rowand or Hunter and go on about it.) But Cano may already be the best 2B in baseball. If not, he's close. And he's an important force in the Yankee lineup. He could hit as high as 5th.

Would you be willing to deal a player of Robinson Cano's stature to get a pitcher of the quality of Santana? Then who would play 2B? Betemit?

If I were the Yankees GM, I would offer Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera, and Alan Horne.

Yes, we all know how good of a prospect Phil Hughes is, but we are still talking about a pitching prospect.

Come on people! It is a crapshoot! His numbers project well, but we have seen several phenom-type starters unable to deliver - Felix (who projected better than Hughes).

The odds of Hughes being the pitcher that Johan Santana is now are against him.

The Yankees have the money, spend it!

We already know the Yankees are "plenty" good to make the playoffs but they are trying to win a World Series. That's what separates them from a team like the Braves.

200 Million dollar payroll...does it really matter.....
Such bad decisions over the past 5-10 years just get swept under the rug because of the money and depth......

The Orioles, Rays, Blue Jays have zero shot over 162 games to compete... If they have a better than a 85+ games that's exceeding expectations...
