Default Bradford close to signing with the O's

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/b...tory?track=rss

According to the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles are close to signing Chad Bradford to a three-year deal.
One of Boston's blunders from last year that hasn't gotten the attention it deserved was the decision to non-tender Bradford. He's a bad risk on a three-year deal given his history of back problems, but he's mighty good at what he does. He gave up just one homer in 62 innings for the Mets last season.

Got this off Rotoworld.com

I like Bradford a lot but don't want him back if it's more then 2 years especially with Joe Smith coming up this year or next. Plus it will be good to get the picks after losing the first for signing Alou.

I like Bradford but three years is too long a contract for him. I wish him good luck. At least we'll get a draft pick for him.

The o's are thrwoing silly money around for middle relief. The Baez contract is a disgrace, IMO. Anyway, good luck to Brad... he served us well last season.

Everyone seems to be citing a Newsday article which I cannot find but its pretty clear that it's gone. The only question is whether it takes effect this year or next.

I am pretty sure that the elimination of draft pick compensation was just a rumor when the collective barganing agreement was being negotiated again. They did make some adjustments such as eliminating Tier C free agents, but draft pick compensation for Type A & Type B (these classes have been slightly redefined, 0-20% for Type A, 20-40% for Type B) still exists.

Default Draft Pick Compensation

Alright, well I did some digging and found an informative article by Keith Law at ESPN. You have to be an insider at the site to view it but I have quoted some of the text:

Quote:
The two compensation classes will shrink beginning in the winter after the 2007 season; the Type A pool will only comprise players in the top 20 percent of their positions, and the Type B pool will only comprise players in the second quintile (21-40 percent).
Currently, Type A free agents are the top 30% of their positions, Type B free agents are in the 30-50% range, and Type C free agents no longer exist. It is important to note that the player rankings are based on the previous 2 years of player statistics, which is why a Cliff Floyd can be ranked as a Type A free agent.

Quote:
If a team has a draft pick in the first half of the first round (that is, in the top 15 picks), its first-round pick is protected from the compensation process, meaning that the highest pick it can lose for signing a Type A free agent is its second-round pick.
This has already come up with the Cubs signing Soriano, the Orioles signing Baez, and the Indians for signing Delucci (all teams lost their 2nd round picks).

Quote:
If a team signs more than one Type A free agent, its picks are parceled out to the "losing" clubs in an order determined by the ratings of the free agents the team signed.
This affects us since the Orioles signed two Type A free agents, but Baez had a higher ranking than Bradford. Since the O's first round pick was protected, the Braves get their 2nd round pick for Baez and we get their 3rd round pick for Bradford.

Quote:
A team that signs a Type A player gives its top draft pick to the club that the player is leaving. The "losing" club also receives a supplemental pick in the "sandwich" round between the first and second rounds.
So for Bradford, we receive the O's 3rd round pick and a supplemental draft pick between the 1st & 2nd rounds.

Quote:
A team that loses a Type B player receives a supplemental pick, but the signing team does not lose any picks.

I would like to see Chad Bradford back with the Mets, but agree that three years seems like a year too much for him.

If he goes, I wish him luck in Baltimore.
