From Stadium Page. There's a lot of work to be done still but they've come a long way in a season.

Has anyone seen the building in person? I mean pictures tell you only so much...

Default Goodbye Old Shea

Citi Field is going to be, undoubtedly, a beautiful ballpark and a great new home for the team. Still, I'll miss old Shea when she's gone and takes all those memories with her.

I first saw Shea Stadium in 1964, going to the NY World's Fair as a 10 year old. It was right across the subway tracks from the NEW stadium. She was all decked out in blue and orange rectangles, strung from cables the length and width of her bright concrete superstructure.

I saw my first game at Shea that year, too. The field grass was green and so was the outfield wall. There was plexiglass in the bullpen doors in the outfield wall so you could watch the pitchers warm up. The seats were wood and the scoreboard with it's Reingold beer and RC Cola signs was state of the art for 1964.

The Mets lost, of course, as they were prone to do in those days. They lost a lot over the years I went to Shea, including a 26 inning heartbreaker to the Giants that ended early in the AM with a Giant home run. Mays or McCovey, I can't remember who. I saw Pittsburgh's Bob Moose no hit my Mets, Pete Rose cheered when he tied the NL mark for hits in consecutive games, Seaver and Koosman and Gil Hodges. I saw them beat the Cubbies that miracle year.

Dykstra took us to the Series when he homered against Houston at Shea. Strawberry amazed with his bombs and Gooden with his Ks.
The 86 Mets were a powerhouse even if the first Champions form 69 would remain my favorite Mets team.

Shea is still a venerable old park, but I guess her time has come. People lament her condition and her outdated facilities and amenities, but it's Shea, one great old ballpark for those of us lucky enough to have called her home for all these years.
