Default Out of Control Market

Am I the only one around here who is praying AGAINST signing any free agents this off season? The Moises Alou signing is looking like an absolute bargain at this point. Some of the ridiculous contracts handed out already:

Gary Matthews: 5 years - $50 M
Juan Pierre - 5 years - $44 M
Soriano - 8 years - $136 M
Justin Speir - 4 years - $18 M

I truly think it is going to take 6 years @ $90 M to get Zito. I just can't see him being worth that dollar amount but it seems that we are almost backed into a corner now.

Should we sign Zito? How much is it going to cost to resign Bradford? What other impacts do you see this market playing with our offseason?

Yep sure is crazy and the pitchers haven't even signed yet. All the middle of the road guys sounds like they are going to get 4 year deals worth 8-10 mil.

I would signing Zito would depends what happens at the winter meetings. I can see Omar trading for a pitcher and not even going after Zito which IMO would be the best move considering the money he will end up getting.

id rather go the trade route, unless Zito comes to us for 15 mil a year or so.

I would sign Zito for 6/80M only if Glavine doesn't return. It's looking more and more like Milledge is going to go for some pitching so it's possible the big changes will come via trade rather than FA.

Add Carlos Lee to the list.... according to multiple media outlets, Houston signed Lee to a 6 year, 100 Mil deal. Thats insane for a power hitter who cant play any D.

These prices are making the Reyes and Wright signings look even better by the day.

Hey I agree with you guys. This market is way out of control. I wonder what your former prospect Preston Wilson is gonna get. He'll probably get 4 years and 36 million from someone.

I think we are really in a quandary concerning our SP staff. We can go to war right now with our offense, but the starting pitching really leaves alot to be desired. Here are some of the names that can compete for a starting spot in the rotation:

Pelfrey
Bannister
Perez
El Duque
Vargas
Humber
Maine
Soler
D. Williams
Zambrano

That is not a very impressive list, not one sure thing in the bunch. If we don't get Glavine to come back and sign Zito, I just can't see that staff taking us to the playoffs. On top of the fact that we have no idea what we get from Pedro upon his return. I hope Omar can pull another rabbit and get some middle of the rotation depth via trade.

There was a story on this that if u take Wtights and Reyes salary compared to Jeters and A-rods that you would only have enough for a-rod and jeter to play 24 innings a year.

So really For the same price u can have A-rod and Jeter play only 24 innings in a year u can have Reyes and Wright play a whole year

Wow, another HORRENDOUS signing hits the market. I wonder if Angelos is getting sick of getting outbid on all the 'big name' free agents out there. The Orioles sign Baez for 3 years @ $19 M. This is up there with the Gary Matthews signing as the candidates for worst free agent signings of the offseason. This is going to really affect us trying to resign Bradford. The cost of middle relievers is skyrocketing.

I really honedtly think that Omar will stay away from the exorbitant figures that some of these guys want... with the exception of Zito. I think BZ may be worth what he gets (unless it is stupid crazy high). We need consistency, especially at the front of our staff. Glavine's great and all but I don't completely trust his endurance throught the full season, wrong side of 40 even though he's a soft tosser. Pedro's not coming back till halfway through and then, who knows what we are going to get. Maine showed some promise on the second biggest stage of all, and so did O perez. El Duque, a nice stop gap and all but, 162 games plus an expected playoff? There's nobody in the rotation that I really trust to excel (or at least be much better than average) from start to finish. I'm no Omar, but he must feel kind of the same way. Hence, Zito for big money. I don't think he wants to cobble together a starting staff to start our season the way we ended it last year.

Looking at what Carlos Lee and Soriano got, you have to admit that the Beltran contract is a steal. The same could be said for the 10.5M Glavine is getting..guys like Meche and Padilla are going to be commanding around 10M a year, and we all know that they are not worth it.

I agree that Minaya will not dive in and give out any crazy contracts. I think Zito will get something around 6/96M, but he is a Boras client, so that is expected.
