In short, they let him go as a free agent and immediately try to sign him back at a much cheaper rate than what arbitration would have resulted in. Looks like a smart move; hope it works. It was also reported that Zambrano is willing to pitch from the pen if it allows him to stay with the Mets. |

It's nice that he wants to return to the Mets. Maybe he feels like he has something to prove here. I know a lot of Mets fans hate VZam and he'll also be compared negatively to Kazmir but the guy really does have the tools to be a good pitcher. I'd like to see him pitch out of the pen and it wouldn't hurt to have the depth in case the Mets get injuries in the rotation like last year.
