NEW YORK - Freddy Meyer is back with the New York Islanders.
Islanders GM Garth Snow reacquired the 26-year-old defenceman Saturday, picking Meyer up on re-entry waivers from the Phoenix Coyotes. "The injuries we've recently had on our blue line prove you can never have enough depth," Snow said in a release. "We've always liked Freddy. He's an intense competitor and he's a very solid defenceman in all areas who is still just 26 years old. "We only lost him earlier in the season because of a numbers game." Phoenix acquired Meyer on waivers earlier in the season when the Islanders tried to send the defenceman down to Bridgeport. Islanders defencemen Bryan Berard and Aaron Johnson are currently sidelined with injuries. Berard could return from a groin injury this week, but Johnson could miss up two months with a knee injury. Meyer played five games with the Coyotes and eight with their AHL affiliate in San Antonio. ![]()
