Default Devils re-sign Martin to 3-year deal

The New Jersey Devils have re-signed defenceman Paul Martin to a 3-year, $11.5 million contract. Martin will earn $3 million this season, $4 million in 2008 and $4.5 million in 2009.
The Minneapolis native scored three goals and collected 23 assists while playing in all 82 games last season. He also had four assists in 11 playoff games.
''Paul Martin is an all-situations type of defenceman, and has developed into one of the more talented young players in the National Hockey League,'' Devils CEO, President and General Manager Lou Lamoriello told the Canadian Press.
Martin is expected to be given more responsibility on the Devils blueline after New Jersey lost Brian Ralfalski to the Red Wings through free-agency:
''As a player, you always want to step in and take over that role,'' Martin told the Canadian Press.
In 232 career games, the 26-year old Martin has tallied 14 goals and 73 assists, all with the Devils. He was selected 62nd overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by New Jersey.
