Tangotiger in his analysis of the TV ratings asserts that the NHL should quit its attempts to lure the casual fan and just recognize that it is a regional sport. I can't recall his NHL allegiance, but I do know he was an Expos fan in baseball.

why in the hell would you move the NY Islanders? Clearly you're a Ranger fan, and the Islanders have a great history behind them. Not to mention that have the same amount of Cups as the Rangers in less than half the amount of years of existance. Last edited by bedir than average; 06-17-2007 at 04:51 PM. There is no reason to move the Islanders, there is no reason to move the Capitals (as was alluded in the post as well). There are grounds to move the Panthers (but I am a Lightning fan - I am biased)
The whole point of this thread was to REALIGN WITHOUT RELOCATION. Some people can't think of the league without putting teams in different cities, which is a sad fact. |

Based on your rules, here is what I would do...
CAMPBELL CONFERENCE Richard Division (east) Boston Bruins Buffalo Sabres Florida Panthers Montreal Canadiens Tampa Bay Lightning Norris Division (central) Atlanta Thrashers Carolina Hurricanes Nashville Predators Ottawa Senators Washington Capitals Smythe Division (west) Calgary Flames Colorado Avalache Edmonton Oilers Toronto Maple Leafs Vancouver Canucks WALES CONFERENCE Patrick Division (east) New Jersey Devils New York Islanders New York Rangers Philadelphia Flyers Pittsburgh Penguins Howe Division (central) Chicago Blackhawks Columbus Blue Jackets Detroit Red Wings Minnesota Wild St. Louis Blues Adams Division (west) Anaheim Ducks Dallas Stars Los Angeles Kings Pheonix Coyotes San Jose Sharks but if I could do it my way............ CAMPBELL CONFERENCE Norris Division Boston Bruins Buffalo Sabres Florida Panthers Montreal Canadiens New Jersey Devils New York Rangers Ottawa Senators Washington Capitals Smythe Division Anaheim Ducks Chicago Blackhawks Columbus Blue Jackets Detroit Red Wings Minnesota Wild Pheonix Coyotes Toronto Maple Leafs Vancouver Canucks WALES CONFERENCE Adams Division Calgary Flames Colorado Avalanche Dallas Stars Edmonton Oilers Los Angeles Kings Nashville Predators San Jose Sharks St. Louis Blues Patrick Division Atlanta Thrashers Carolina Hurricanes Hartford Whalers (Expansion) New York Islanders Philadelphia Flyers Pittsburgh Penguins Winnipeg Jets (Expansion) Tampa Bay Lightning Go back to the old school style. 2 conferences and 4 divisions, all named after people who have built this game. Re-birth 2 franchises (Hartford and Winnipeg) to even up the divisions to 8 teams each and then go back to the old way of doing the playoffs. Top 4 teams in each division play each other in the first and second rounds (1 vs. 4; 2 vs. 3; then the winners of each play each other for the division title) then the 2 division winners in each conference play for their respective conference titles, and then the 2 conference champs play for the cup. All series stay at best of 7 with continuous sudden death OT to decide all ties, and while we're at it with the old school way of hockey, drop the shootout and if you lose a game in OT you get no points, a loss is a loss. I like the continent wide concept only because it is the traditional way of setting up the conferences. In the old days, it didnt matter which region you were in, similar to a NL AL set up in baseball. Each league has teams from across the country, then the leagues have seperate divisions based on region.

Ya that would be cool having famous hockey players as Divsion like the best hockey player for the hardest disvion . Example like Northwest should have Gretzky because its the hardest divion and Gretzky is the best hockey player in the world!

That's arguable. And changing names constantly because it's "The hardest division in the world" causes problems in itself.
But as LIU states -- this is spreading conferences out across North America, not the East/West BS that has been instituted under Gary Bettman. Under this concept, the Northwest division as you know it would be broken up.
