Seems like the salary cap is stopping a lot of teams doing trades right now.
In Montreal, we have 3 defenseman and one goalie that will be UFA at the end of the season, and since we have no space in our cap, nobody expects them to finish in Montreal because we won't be able to afford them all. There are teams not doing much lately as well that might want to shake things up. What do you think? |

I think teams are rightened of the blockbuster right now.
With the cap playing a part, there have been a lot of big name players that have moved around because of cap reasons and sometimes the teams trading the stars are getting fleeced. Or they just don't end up happy with what they get. Every team out there -- I believe sans the Senators, though they haven't been all world so far this year -- haven't done well with the cap. They played that first off-season after the lockout like a normal free agency season -- spending large sums on players without thinking of the reprocussions. When the market "corrects" itself there will be more buyouts and more free agents and you will see some teams wiser while others will go right back to the old tried and true method. NHL teams have not adjusted to putting the best teams forward under the cap. I expect it to improve but the players and owners might have to tweek the CBA to help out.

I personally think Philadelphia deal. Possibly involving Gagne. I thought at first that the Bruins were going to deal for a goaltender, but they have been on a hot streak, I just dont know what they would give up.

^^ Spotnick, with no offense intended to Montreal in general but there have been daily rumors since 1998 that the Lightning were going to trade Vincent Lecavalier... Marty St. Louis and Brad Richards are now part of that equation of rumors both because of there contracts -- and their Quebecois ties (Brad played with Rimouski of course).
Richards was supposed to be dealt last year because the Lightning needed a goalie, from what Montreal media reported. In fact, I was told by certain fans that Richards being traded was guaranteed (I was also told that my skepticism over "confirmed" Richards-to-Montreal trades was unjustified and I was a prick because I didn't believe and blah blah blah). The one thing I have learned over the years is you can't trust Montreal trade rumors worth a damn (and you can't respect Toronto Maple Leaf would-be trades worth a damn either

I know. I worked with a friend of Vinny, and he doesn't want to play in Montreal anyways. But I'm tired of hearing those rumours at least once a month. |
