Default Roenick's Days are Numbered...

J.R. benched, future with Coyotes uncertain

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2697403

"I treat players like men and they should act like men," Gretzky told reporters Wednesday. "J.R., all and all, has been pretty positive. But the reality is, last night he made a mistake. ... There will be ramifications for what happened."

The Arizona Republic reported that Gretzky would inform Roenick of his benching and discuss his future with the team Thursday morning.

"I'm not disappointed with him because J.R. is a very emotional young man, and he's a good person, but what he did last night wasn't right," Gretzky told the Tribune on Wednesday.

Asked when Roenick might play again, Gretzky said, "I don't know, but it won't be [Thursday]. I' ve got one of two guys to put in: him or Mike Ricci. I'm going to put Ricci in. ... I think I would lose respect from my players if I played one guy over the other. I really do."

Desert Dog House

Jeremy Roenick's decision to walk out on the Phoenix Coyotes Tuesday night could have long term ramifications for his career in Arizona.

Roenick was scratched from Tuesday night's game against Vancouver for what was termed a back injury, despite the fact the veteran forward said he felt healthy enough to play. Rather than remain at the rink, Roenick elected to leave and ended up watching part of the game at a nearby restaurant while eating dinner.

The decision to abandon his teammates did not sit well with head coach Wayne Gretzky.

Report: JR to retire at season's end

http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/phx061214.html

Coyotes forward Jeremy Roenick, who walked out on his teammates before Tuesday's game in Vancouver, plans on retiring at the end of the season, reports the East Valley Tribune.

"End of the (NHL) year, absolutely (I'll retire)," Roenick told the paper.

"The way it seems to be going right now, I don't think anybody would want to give me another chance to tell you the truth."

Roenick stormed out of General Motors Place before Tuesday's game upon learning he would be scratched due to back spasms and the Tribune claims he could be out of chances with the Coyotes as well.

For a guy who used to have people talking about his speed; its just painfully clear the speed of the game is too much for him to handle. He is a total non-factor on the ice. He's lucky...to have found a team this season IMO. He's a colorful personality; and it's too bad he failed...because he would've been a good somewhat known American player to perhaps have promoted the game with a few more seasons. I have no doubt he'll get on NHL related TV shows...and become a broadcaster. Walking out on your teamates? That's pretty bad...even if your team isn't good. There's no excuse.

One would think. . .

Yet, everyone is quick to forgive Brett Hull for announcing that the Blues suck and he's ashamed to be their captain.

I don't get it.
